Hoverla is the highest mountain in Ukraine, rising to 2,061 meters above sea level. It is located in the Chornohora mountain range of the Ukrainian Carpathians, near the border of Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. As the country’s tallest peak, Hoverla is one of Ukraine’s most recognizable natural landmarks.
The mountain features rounded alpine meadows, forested lower slopes, and a clearly defined summit marked by a monument and flagpole. The name “Hoverla” is believed to derive from a Hungarian word meaning “snowy,” reflecting the mountain’s long-lasting snow cover during colder months. The climate is variable, with sudden fog, strong winds, and rapid weather changes common even in summer.
Hoverla is a popular destination for hikers and tourists from across Ukraine and abroad. Thousands of people climb it annually, especially during national holidays. Although the routes are considered non-technical, the ascent requires good physical condition due to elevation gain and changing weather. From the summit, visitors enjoy sweeping views of the Carpathian ridges stretching across western Ukraine.
