K2 (8611 m) is the second-highest mountain on Earth and the highest point in Pakistan. It rises in the Karakoram Range on the border area of Gilgit-Baltistan and China, and is known for its steep faces, severe weather, and technical climbing difficulty. Unlike many famous peaks, K2 has no easy route and demands strong fitness, high-altitude experience, and careful acclimatization.

The mountain is part of the Baltoro Muztagh and is reached through one of the world’s most dramatic trekking approaches, the Baltoro Glacier and Gondogoro La region. Base camp expeditions usually begin from Skardu and continue by road and trek to Askole, then onward through Jhola, Paiju, Urdukas, and Goro II. The area is remote, wild, and visually spectacular.

K2 is famous among climbers for its high fatality risk, unstable weather, and long summit push. It is climbed mainly in summer, when conditions are relatively stable, but even then storms, avalanches, and rockfall remain major hazards. For trekkers, the route to base camp is one of the most iconic in the world, offering close views of Baltoro Glacier, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum group.

Travel to the region requires permits, logistics support, and often local guides or porters. Most visitors use established expedition companies based in Pakistan or international operators with local partners. The journey is demanding but rewarding, combining high mountain scenery, cultural encounters in Gilgit-Baltistan, and access to one of the planet’s most legendary peaks.

Popular trekking routes

The classic trekking route to K2 Base Camp follows the Baltoro Glacier from Askole to Concordia, then continues toward base camp. It is a long, strenuous glacier trek with camping, river crossings, and changing terrain. The scenery is exceptional, with close views of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, and the Trango Towers. A popular extension is crossing Gondogoro La, which adds a high pass and panoramic alpine views.

Popular mountaineering routes

The standard climbing line on K2 is the Abruzzi Spur, first climbed in 1954. It is the most established route, but still highly technical, with steep rock, ice, and avalanche exposure. Other notable lines include the Magic Line, the North Ridge, and the West Face, each considered more difficult and less frequently attempted. All routes require advanced alpine skills, fixed rope use, and strong acclimatization.

Nearest populated area, start of the route and how to get there

The nearest major populated hub is Skardu, the main gateway to the Karakoram. Most expeditions start by road from Skardu to Askole, the last village before the trek begins. Travelers usually reach Skardu by flight from Islamabad or by long road travel via Gilgit. From Askole, the route continues on foot through the Baltoro Glacier corridor to base camp.

Permits, local Guides, tour agencies

Climbing K2 requires official permits from Pakistan authorities, and trekkers to the base camp may also need registration and local support. Hiring experienced local guides and porters is strongly recommended because of glacier travel and remote logistics. Well-known operators include Adventure Pakistan, Julius Baer Expeditions, Madison Mountaineering, Alpine Ascents International, and Seven Summit Treks. Typical K2 expedition prices range from about USD 35,000 to USD 85,000+, depending on services, oxygen, and support level. Base camp trekking packages are usually much lower, often from USD 2,000 to USD 6,000.

Best time for ascension

The best climbing window for K2 is usually late June to August, when temperatures are less severe and weather is comparatively stable. Most summit attempts happen in July and early August. Earlier in the season, snow conditions can be unstable, while later in summer storms and fresh snowfall may increase risk. Trekking to base camp is also best in the same period, when glacier crossings are more manageable.

Equipment

For trekking, carry sturdy boots, layered clothing, rain protection, trekking poles, a warm sleeping bag, sunglasses, gloves, and a reliable backpack. For climbing K2, essential gear includes high-altitude boots, crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, ascender, descender, fixed ropes, down suit, oxygen system, and expedition-rated sleeping equipment. Because conditions are extreme, all gear should be tested before departure and matched to high-altitude use.

Travel tips

Plan extra days for weather delays, acclimatization, and transport changes. Carry cash in Pakistan, as remote areas have limited banking access. Use a trusted operator for permits, porters, and glacier logistics. Respect local customs in Gilgit-Baltistan and pack out all waste. For trekkers, physical preparation is essential, and for climbers, prior experience on 7000 m peaks is strongly advised before attempting K2.
