The Watzmann Traverse is the famous ridge crossing over the three main summits of the Watzmann massif. It is a long and exposed alpine ridge route with sustained scrambling and climbing on steep rock. The traverse is well known for its airy sections and the need for secure movement on exposed terrain. It is usually undertaken as a major day outing or with a hut overnight, depending on conditions and fitness. The route requires good weather, sure-footedness, and comfort with exposure. It is a classic objective in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The normal route to the Watzmann summit via Hocheck is the standard alpine ascent on the massif. It follows a steep, exposed mountain path and ridge terrain rather than a simple hiking trail. The route is well documented and commonly used as the access line for the Watzmann Traverse. Despite being the normal route, it still involves significant exposure and requires alpine experience, especially in poor conditions. The upper sections are on rocky terrain with some scrambling. It is generally climbed from the Watzmannhaus as a long day or with an overnight stay.
