The route follows an easy waymarked trail up to Hocheck, the northern presummit. Only one steeper passage is equipped with a cable between Watzmannhaus and Hocheck.
From Hocheck onwards the route follows the ridge to Mittelspitze, the main summit. This part of the route is much more exposed than the previous one, which is probably why most people do not go further than Hocheck. There are no really difficult passages, all those that could be difficult are equipped with cables but it is NOT a via ferrata (klettersteig) in the contemporary sense as the cable is not continuous.
Via ferrata kit and helmet are used by some people but most do without. Helmet would be useful for doing the complete traverse as the descent from the S summit is exposed to rockfall danger, but it is useless on the ridge.
