San Gorgonio Mountain

San Gorgonio Mountain (11,503 ft / 3,506 m), often called "Old Greyback," is the highest peak in Southern California and a premier high-elevation destination near Big Bear Lake. The Vivian Creek Trail is the most popular route, a strenuous 14–18 mile round-trip with over 5,300 ft gain through pine forests and alpine meadows. Summer wildflowers, fall colors, and possible winter snow make it versatile; the summit offers expansive views of the Mojave Desert, San Jacinto, and San Bernardino Mountains. It's a favorite for backpackers, peak-baggers, and those seeking solitude compared to coastal hikes. Permits are required, and it's often snow-covered into late spring, adding challenge.
