This is the classic and most popular documented route on Gran Paradiso. It is usually climbed from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the mountain's principal high huts. The route is predominantly on glacier and snow, with a short rocky finish near the summit. It is not a technical climb in the rock-climbing sense, but it is a real alpine route with objective glacier hazards. The upper mountain can be affected by crevasses, fresh snow, and poor visibility. The final summit ridge is exposed enough to require care, especially when crowded or icy.
