Location and surroundings
Doyle’s Delight belongs to the Central American Cordillera, within the Maya Highlands and the Maya Mountains. It is in Belize, in the administrative region of Cayo. At 1,124 m, it is the highest mountain in Belize and the highest of the 26 named peaks in the Maya Mountains. The terrain around it is part of the forested Maya Mountain interior, with broad ridges, steep local relief and protected land nearby.
The summit area lies in or near Chiquibul National Park, so access is shaped by remote jungle conditions rather than by roads or developed mountain facilities. The mountain is also the high point of the Maya Mountains range, which extends into both Belize and Guatemala.

The view from the summit
Within 25 km of the summit, the main high points are the nearby ridges of the Maya Mountains rather than distant isolated peaks. The most prominent summit in sight range is Engendro del Diablo, about 0.5 km northeast and 1,115 m high. Little Quartz Ridge lies about 11.5 km southwest at 1,035 m, while Abraham is farther southwest at 21.0 km and 670 m.
Lower hills such as Raspaculo Hill to the east and Cerro Miramar to the south sit well below the summit level. In clear conditions, the surrounding ridge pattern is the main feature rather than a long list of distant peaks.

Climate estimates from NASA POWER climate data for 2001–2020 suggest a warm tropical mountain climate at the summit. The mean temperature is about 23 °C in the warmest month, May, and about 18 °C in the coldest month, January. Mean precipitation in the surrounding area is about 1,950 mm a year, with about 250 mm in the wettest month, October, and about 50 mm in the driest month, April.
At this elevation, weather can change quickly with cloud, heavy rain and slippery ground, especially in the wet season. Tropical downpours, humid conditions and muddy trails are the main hazards, and storms can make navigation harder in the forested terrain.
Best time to visit
At the summit, the mean temperature stays above freezing in every month, from January through December. The drier part of the year is generally the period around April, when rainfall is lowest, and the wetter season builds toward October, the wettest month. For travel in this part of Belize, the drier months are usually the more practical time for long jungle approaches.
Even in the drier season, the mountain remains humid and forested, so visitors should expect wet ground, insects and slow progress. In the rainy months, river crossings and trail conditions can become more difficult.
Nature and wildlife
The summit lies in a tropical mountain forest landscape typical of the Maya Mountains, with dense vegetation, steep ridges and a rich mix of plants and animals. The 2004 and 2007 biological surveys focused on plants, fungi, insects, amphibians, birds and small mammals, which reflects the diversity expected in this part of Belize.
Chiquibul National Park is the protected area named near the summit, and the surrounding forest is part of a larger conservation landscape. In this elevation zone, visitors can expect humid woodland, mossy slopes and wildlife adapted to warm, wet mountain conditions.
Guides and organised ascents
For a remote mountain like Doyle’s Delight, a certified guide is sensible and often essential in practice because of the long jungle approach, navigation demands and the need to manage weather, water and logistics. History and name
The name Doyle’s Delight was coined in a 1989 report by Sharon Matola. It refers to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his novel The Lost World, which includes the line about a country having something wild and wonderful to discover. The name was later adopted widely and is used by the Government of Belize as the country’s highest point.
The mountain was long confused with Victoria Peak, which was once thought to be Belize’s highest point. Later measurements showed Victoria Peak to be slightly lower. A proposal to rename the summit Kaan Witz, meaning “Sky Mountain” in Maya, did not gain broad acceptance.
