Camelback Mountain (2,704 ft / 824 m) is one of the most iconic and heavily visited peaks in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Shaped like a kneeling camel, it rises sharply from the desert floor in the heart of the city, offering two strenuous trails: Echo Canyon (steeper, shorter) and Cholla (longer, more gradual). The hike features rocky scrambles, handrails on steep sections, and panoramic views of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and the sprawling Valley of the Sun. Thousands climb it weekly for sunrise/sunset hikes, workouts, and cityscape photos. Wildlife includes bighorn sheep and lizards; summer heat makes early mornings essential.
