Every summit of the Andes above 6,000 m, from Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest mountain outside Asia, to Uturuncu in Bolivia, which only just clears the mark. Argentina holds the largest share, followed by Peru, Chile and Bolivia, while Ecuador contributes a single peak, Chimborazo.
The list splits into two very different kinds of climbing. In the dry Puna de Atacama, huge volcanoes such as Ojos del Salado, Monte Pissis, Bonete and Llullaillaco are long, cold, remote ascents with little ice and even less water. In Peru's Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash, Huascarán, Yerupajá, Siula Grande and Chacraraju are steep glaciated peaks, and Bolivia adds Sajama, Illimani and Huayna Potosí.
