Watzmann Traverse

The east face of the Watzmann is one of the classic big alpine walls of the Eastern Alps. It is a serious rock climb with long exposure and sustained difficulty, and it is far more committing than the normal ridge routes. The route is known for loose sections, route-finding demands, and objective hazards from rockfall and weather. It is typically climbed by experienced alpinists with solid multi-pitch rock-climbing ability. Conditions and exact line choice can vary, so careful route-finding is essential. This is a mountaineering route rather than a hiking ascent.

The normal route to the Watzmann summit via Hocheck is the standard alpine ascent on the massif. It follows a steep, exposed mountain path and ridge terrain rather than a simple hiking trail. The route is well documented and commonly used as the access line for the Watzmann Traverse. Despite being the normal route, it still involves significant exposure and requires alpine experience, especially in poor conditions. The upper sections are on rocky terrain with some scrambling. It is generally climbed from the Watzmannhaus as a long day or with an overnight stay.
