The North Ridge is one of the established alpine routes on Ruapehu and is the standard mountaineering line on the mountain's northern side. It is a volcanic snow-and-ice route rather than a technical rock climb, but conditions can vary greatly with weather, snow cover, and glacier/ice exposure. The route is exposed to severe alpine weather, whiteout, and avalanche or cornice hazards. In poor visibility, navigation on the broad upper slopes can be difficult.
