Ruta Sur is a documented south-side ascent line on Pico de Orizaba. It is generally a non-technical alpine route on snow and volcanic terrain, but conditions can vary significantly with season and weather. Compared with the Jamapa Route, it is less commonly used and may involve more route-finding. The route is exposed to altitude, cold, and loose or unstable volcanic ground on the lower mountain. Upper sections can involve snow or ice depending on conditions. It is a genuine mountaineering route rather than a hiking trail.
