Normal Route via the Schreckhorn Hut and South Ridge

This is the standard and best-known route on Schreckhorn. It is a serious high-alpine climb combining glacier travel, steep mixed ground, and exposed ridge climbing. The route is typically approached from the Schreckhorn Hut, which shortens the summit day but does not remove the objective hazards. Crevasses and changing glacier conditions are significant concerns on the approach. The upper mountain is exposed and requires secure movement on rock and mixed terrain. In good conditions it is a classic Bernese Alps alpine ascent, but it remains demanding and committing.

Route Outline

Schreckhorn Hut (Schreckhornhütte) -> glacier approach to the south side of the mountain
Cross the lower glacier and reach the foot of the south ridge
Climb the south ridge, with mixed and rocky sections, to the upper ridge
Follow the crest to the summit of Schreckhorn
Descend by the same route to the hut and continue to the valley

North Ridge

The North Ridge is a major alpine route on Schreckhorn and is generally considered more difficult and serious than the normal south-ridge ascent. It is a long, exposed line with sustained mixed climbing and difficult sections on rock and snow. The route is highly committing because retreat can be complex once high on the ridge. Conditions on the ridge and the approach glacier strongly affect difficulty and safety. It is a classic objective for experienced alpinists seeking a more technical ascent of the peak.
