Normal Route (from La Renclusa via the Portillón Superior and the Glacier of Aneto)

2A | PD | II Edit route
This is the classic and most frequently climbed mountaineering route on Aneto. It is a non-technical alpine ascent in summer conditions, but it still requires glacier travel and the ability to move safely on snow and ice. The famous Paso de Mahoma, a narrow rocky ridge just before the summit, is the route’s most exposed and memorable section. Conditions on the glacier vary greatly by season, with crevasses and hard snow increasing the seriousness of the climb. The route is commonly done from the Renclusa refuge, often as a long day or with an overnight stay. In late season, the glacier can become broken and more demanding than the nominal grade suggests.

Coronas Route

2A | PD | II
The Coronas route is a well-known alternative ascent to Aneto from the south side. It is generally considered a mountaineering route because it involves steep snow and glacier terrain near the upper mountain. The approach is long and the route is more remote than the Renclusa normal route. Late in the season, the upper snowfields may be reduced and the route can become a loose, rocky climb in places. The final access to the summit still uses the narrow Paso de Mahoma. It is a classic way to climb Aneto when conditions or logistics favor the southern approach.
