This is the classic and most frequently climbed mountaineering route on Aneto. It is a non-technical alpine ascent in summer conditions, but it still requires glacier travel and the ability to move safely on snow and ice. The famous Paso de Mahoma, a narrow rocky ridge just before the summit, is the route’s most exposed and memorable section. Conditions on the glacier vary greatly by season, with crevasses and hard snow increasing the seriousness of the climb. The route is commonly done from the Renclusa refuge, often as a long day or with an overnight stay. In late season, the glacier can become broken and more demanding than the nominal grade suggests.
