Foxes Tarn Route

The Foxes Tarn route is a recognised mountain line on the Scafell side of the massif and is often used to avoid the more committing Broad Stand descent. It involves steep, rough ground and is not a simple walking path. The terrain is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain. It is a route for experienced hillwalkers and scramblers who are comfortable with exposed mountain ground. Navigation is important in mist because the upper plateau is featureless.

Approach from Wasdale or Eskdale toward Scafell
Reach Foxes Tarn below the Scafell summit area
Climb the steep rocky gully/col from the tarn
Gain the upper ridge toward Scafell Pike
Traverse or continue to the summit and descend

West Wall Traverse

A classic Lake District mountaineering line on the west side of Scafell Pike. It is a serious rock-and-gully route rather than a walking ascent, and is generally treated as a scrambling or easy climbing objective in guidebooks. Conditions can make a big difference, with wet rock and loose sections increasing the seriousness. Route-finding is important on the complex west face. It is best attempted in dry conditions by parties comfortable on exposed mountain terrain.

Lord's Rake

Lord's Rake is a well-known mountaineering line on the Scafell massif and is commonly used as part of a climb to Scafell Pike. It is a steep gully-and-rake system with loose rock and objective hazards from falling stones. The route is more serious than the normal hill paths and requires care in route-finding. In poor conditions it can be awkward and dangerous, especially when wet or icy. It is typically combined with other scrambling terrain to reach the summit.
