Face N
From the Vélan hut, the easiest approach route passes at the foot of the rock marked by point 3091 m. Ascend the glacier to the northwest foot of this rock to about 2960 m, then join the 3000 m contour line by the center. Continue ascending the glacier by its center until the bergschrund. About 2h from the hut to the bergschrund.
The bergschrund is located at about 3180 m. Ascend the north face which leads, on a due south bearing, to point 3580 m. The slope starts gently at a good 45-50°, then, under the upper seracs, quickly rises to 60-65°. The foot of the serac barrier is around 3520 m, barely 80 m below the Dôme du Vélan. About 2h from the bergschrund to the seracs.
The seracs can be crossed by the shortest line (start at 90°) or bypassed, here by the west. Follow along staying at the foot of the ice wall, a good support for belaying with ice screws. At the foot of the seracs, the route is mixed, rock, slabs, sometimes ice or snow, depending on conditions. In case of low snow cover, a few passages on slabs or unstable rock are close to 5, or even an artificial passage for the first one (walking on ice screws). Allow 2 to 4h depending on conditions to bypass the seracs to the Dôme du Vélan. The summit is then reached very quickly (3727 m).
In total, 6 to 8h, perhaps more if conditions are unfavorable, are necessary.
By the Annibal couloir or one of its adjacent couloirs, if snow conditions allow it. Average slope of 45°, with a few short ice passages a little steeper. At the foot of the couloir, step onto the Glacier de Proz and continue northwest toward point 2816 m. Take the couloir that leads to Troistorrents (2534 m) then Les Darreys from where the ski lift can be followed to Bourg-St-Bernard.
- Anker ice axes, quickdraws 6-8, ice screws 6-8, 4 large slings, 5 m cordelettes, lunule hook, in short, enough to do steep ice climbing.
- North face whose main difficulties are between 3100 m and 3600 m.
- Reasonable elevation gain of about 1100 m, but difficulties very variable depending on conditions, low snow cover (slabs, unstable rock in exposed passages!), fresh snow (avalanche danger?), or hard snow (good conditions?)
- Exposed north face.

Take the normal route to Col Annibal. Nothing complicated. In spring, the west slope below p. 2794 is often ski on the back / footpath.
Details →From the Vélan hut, cross the Tseudet glacier and reach the foot of the goulotte via a snow slope.
Details →From Bourg Saint Bernard, first climb under the ski lifts of the ski station. At 2200 m the slope becomes steeper. A few cairns are placed at the start, then find a trail track a little higher up. Climb back up the big grassy slope, always on the right bank of the torrent, until reaching the foot…
Details →From the Vélan hut, follow the west moraine of the Tseudet glacier (follow the water supply pipe from the hut, cairns) then head onto the glacier in the direction of Mont de la Gouille, staying away from the north face of the Vélan (serac fall).Cross the glacier then climb its right bank on…
Details →From the Rosazza bivouac at Savoie (2651 m), take the path to the left (northwest) that allows you to enter the valley descending from Col de Valsorey. The path continues almost flat on the left bank (good track, cairns) until it crosses the stream. After crossing it, follow the cairns (now more…
Details →From the Vélan hut, climb up the moraine (cairn), step onto the glacier shortly before 2700 m and climb 100 m more before traversing the Tseudet glacier. Beware, it is important to stay as low as possible, because serac falls throw debris over an impressive distance. The ascent to the Gouille col…
Details →Climb the Plan du Jeu track, then ascend the moraine (follow the cairns) to the Proz glacier, pass at the foot of Dent de Proz, around 2900 m, head northeast to reach a small glacial cirque, climb it to the foot of the steep couloir that closes it off.Climb this couloir as best you can until you…
