East Ridge

The North Ridge is one of the established alpine routes on Mount Taranaki and is the standard mountaineering line from the north side. It is a steep volcanic ascent that can involve loose scree, exposed rock, and snow or ice in winter conditions. Route-finding can be serious in poor visibility because the mountain is prone to rapid weather changes and whiteout. The route is generally climbed as a day ascent by experienced parties, but conditions can make it much more demanding. Avalanche, ice, and rockfall hazards may be present depending on season and weather. This is a mountaineering route rather than a walking track, and alpine equipment may be required.

The South Ridge is another established alpine route on Mount Taranaki. It is a steep and exposed ascent on volcanic terrain, with conditions ranging from dry scrambling to snow and ice. The route is sensitive to weather, and poor visibility can make navigation difficult. Loose rock and unstable surfaces are common hazards. Depending on season, crampons and an ice axe may be necessary. It is a genuine mountaineering route rather than a trekking route.

The South Face is a serious alpine route on Mount Taranaki and is generally more difficult than the ridge lines. It involves steep climbing on volcanic terrain that may include rock, snow, and ice. The face can be exposed to rockfall and rapidly changing weather. Route-finding and condition assessment are important, especially when the mountain is iced up. This is a technical mountaineering objective and not a walking route. Parties should expect a more committing climb than the standard ridge ascents.
