East Ridge

The East Ridge is a recognized mountaineering route on Breithorn and is generally more serious than the normal glacier ascent. It is a ridge climb with greater exposure and more complex terrain than the standard route. Depending on conditions, it may involve mixed snow and rock sections. The route is less frequently climbed and requires more solid alpine experience. Objective hazards include cornices, wind-affected snow, and route-finding difficulties. It is best attempted in stable conditions.

Approach the east side of Breithorn from the Zermatt/Cervinia side
Climb snow and mixed terrain onto the East Ridge
Follow the ridge over more exposed sections toward the summit
Finish on the summit ridge and reach the top
Descend by the ascent route

This is the standard and by far the most commonly climbed route on Breithorn. It is a high-altitude glacier and snow ascent with generally moderate technical difficulty. The main objective hazards are crevasses, route-finding in poor visibility, and altitude. In normal conditions it is considered a straightforward alpine climb, but it still requires glacier travel competence and proper equipment. The route is often done as a day ascent from the Klein Matterhorn area. Conditions can vary significantly with snow cover and season.

West Ridge

The West Ridge is a documented alpine route on Breithorn and is more of a mountaineering line than a hiking path. It is typically a snow and glacier climb with a ridge character rather than a sustained rock climb. The route can involve crevassed glacier terrain and exposed ridge sections depending on conditions. It is less commonly climbed than the normal route from the Klein Matterhorn area. Snow stability and visibility are important factors. Exact difficulty varies with seasonal conditions.
