The Jamapa Route is the standard and best-known climbing line on Pico de Orizaba. It is a high-altitude snow and glacier ascent rather than a technical rock climb, but it still requires proper alpine equipment and glacier travel skills. The route is commonly climbed from the Piedra Grande hut area on the north side of the mountain. Objective hazards include altitude, cold, wind, and changing snow or ice conditions on the upper mountain. In normal conditions it is considered the most straightforward route to the summit. It is the route most frequently described in guidebooks and climbing references for the peak.
