Urdele is a 2,228 m peak in Romania, in Gorj County near the municipality of Novaci. It belongs to the Căpățână Mountains, within the wider chain of the East European Highlands, Carpathian Mountains, Southern Carpathians, and Parâng Mountains. In its own range, Urdele is the highest of 174 named peaks and the high point of the Căpățână Mountains.

The mountain is closely associated with the high Urdele Pass on the Transalpina road, so many visitors know the name from the pass rather than as a separate summit. The terrain is typical of a high Carpathian ridge: open alpine ground, exposed passes, and nearby peaks rising above 2,000 m.

Urdele lies in the Căpățână Mountains, part of the Parâng Mountains in the Southern Carpathians of Romania. Administratively it is in Novaci municipality, Gorj County. At 2,228 m, it is the highest of 174 named peaks in its range and the range high point. The surroundings are high ridges, passes and open alpine slopes, with the road corridor of the Transalpina crossing nearby.

    Neighbouring peaks

Urdele sits among a cluster of high summits and passes. The closest named features are:

    • Pasul Urdele (mountain pass), 2,145 m, 0.2 km west
    • Iezer (peak), 2,157 m, 1.3 km west
    • Dengheru (peak), 2,084 m, 1.5 km southeast
    • Saua Iezer (mountain pass), 2,093 m, 1.6 km west

    • Muntinul Mare (peak), 2,113 m, 1.8 km north
    • Muntinul Mic (peak), 2,062 m, 2.1 km northeast

The nearest higher peak is Mohorul, which rises 109 m above Urdele and lies just 1.8 km away to the west.

    The view from the summit

From Urdele, the highest peaks within 25 km are concentrated to the west in the same mountain system. The main summits in view or within the wider skyline are Parângul Mare (2,519 m, 9.3 km west), Stoinița (2,421 m, 10.3 km west), Ieșu (2,375 m, 7.2 km west), Setea Mare (2,365 m, 4.1 km west), Găuri (2,243 m, 6.0 km west), and Ştefleşti (2,242 m, 23.7 km northeast). The westward line of higher ground shows how Urdele sits on the eastern side of a major Carpathian ridge.

    The range

Urdele belongs to the Căpățână Mountains, which are part of the Parâng Mountains in the Southern Carpathians. The range’s highest peak is Urdele itself, and the range contains 174 named peaks. Urdele ranks first in that list, so it is both the high point of the range and its highest named summit. In the broader mountain chain, it is one of the high peaks of the Romanian Carpathians, though not among the tallest in the wider Southern Carpathians.

    Climate and weather

These are estimates from NASA POWER climate data for 2001–2020, adjusted to summit elevation. At the summit, the warmest month is about July, with a mean temperature of about 10 °C, and the coldest is about January, with a mean of about -9 °C. Mean temperatures are above freezing from May through October. The surrounding area receives about 850 mm of precipitation a year, with about 120 mm in June and about 40 mm in February. Expect rapid weather changes, wind on the ridge, fog, summer storms and winter snow or ice.

    Best time to visit

For a visit on foot, the most practical months are usually the snow-free part of the year, and the climate data point to May through October as the period when summit temperatures are on average above freezing. The drier months are late winter, especially February, while June is the wettest month. In practice, summer and early autumn are the most comfortable times for ridge travel, but even then the weather can change quickly at this elevation.

    Nature and wildlife

At 2,228 m, Urdele lies in a high-mountain zone of grass, rocky ground and exposed ridges, with lower slopes that can carry mountain forest and subalpine vegetation. In this part of the Carpathians, visitors may see alpine flowers in season, as well as mountain birds and large mammals typical of Romanian highlands. The open terrain and wind-exposed passes make the area feel more like a ridge crossing than a wooded summit, so weather and visibility matter as much as the height itself.

    Guides and organised ascents

For a peak of this height and exposed ridge terrain, a certified guide is usually not essential for experienced hikers in settled weather, but it can be useful in poor visibility, winter conditions or if you want local route planning. In Romania, the national mountain guide association is the Romanian Mountain Guides Association (Asociația Ghizilor Montani din România, AGMR), which is not an IFMGA/UIAGM member. The national alpine club is the Romanian Alpine Club. An established guiding company in the country is Active Travel in Brașov. Guided trips usually depend on duration, group size, hut nights and equipment needs.

    Safety and preparation

Urdele is a high ridge environment, so even in summer you should be ready for wind, cold rain, fog and sudden drops in temperature. Good footwear, layers, navigation tools and enough food and water are important, especially if you leave the road corridor and move onto open slopes. In winter or shoulder season, snow and ice can make the area much more serious. For mountain rescue in Romania, call 112; this reaches Salvamont. The direct Salvamont line is 0SALVAMONT = 0725 826 668.

    History and name

Urdele is best known in practice as Pasul Urdele, the high pass crossed by the Transalpina road. That road association has made the name familiar to drivers and travellers crossing the Southern Carpathians. As a summit, Urdele shares its name with the pass nearby, and the pass is the feature most people encounter first when travelling through this part of the mountains.

    Interesting facts

Urdele is the highest of 174 named peaks in the Căpățână Mountains and the range high point. Its nearest higher neighbour is Mohorul, 1.8 km to the west and 109 m higher. The summit is also only 0.2 km from Pasul Urdele, which explains why the name is strongly linked to the pass on the Transalpina. In the wider area, several higher peaks lie to the west, including Parângul Mare, the tallest summit within 25 km.
