This is the standard and best-known ascent of Torrecerredo, the highest summit in the Picos de Europa. It is a serious alpine route rather than a simple hike, with steep rocky ground, loose scree, and route-finding in a complex karst landscape. The climb is usually approached from the Urriellu area, often using the refuge as the base for the ascent. The upper section involves sustained scrambling on exposed rock, with conditions that can become much more committing in wet weather or with snow. Objective hazards include loose stone, poor visibility, and the difficulty of navigation among the jous and rocky ribs. It is generally considered a mountaineering outing requiring sure-footedness and comfort on exposed terrain.

The southwest ridge is a more direct and more technical mountaineering line on Torrecerredo than the normal route. It follows a rocky crest with more sustained exposure and more demanding climbing than the standard ascent. The route is alpine in character, with sections that may require careful route-finding and occasional use of hands on steeper rock. Loose blocks and exposure are the main objective concerns, especially in dry conditions where rockfall can be an issue. It is best suited to experienced climbers comfortable on exposed mountain rock. In poor weather it becomes significantly more serious and difficult to navigate.
