    Location and surroundings

Penablanca lies in northern Spain, in Navarre, within the municipality of Roncal / Erronkari and the Pyrinioak district. It is part of the Uztarroz Mountains, a subrange of the Southwestern Pyrenees. In its own range it is the highest point, and the terrain around it is typical of the Pyrenean foothills and mid-mountain zone: ridges, grassy slopes, rocky crests and narrow passes rather than broad lowland terrain.

At 1,583 m, it is a local high point rather than a major Pyrenean summit, but it dominates its immediate surroundings. The mountain sits in a part of Navarre where relief changes quickly, so neighbouring peaks are close enough to shape the views and the walking lines.

    Neighbouring peaks

    • Largintia (peak), 1,559 m, 0.8 km south
    • Fernando (peak), 1,505 m, 2.6 km west
    • Santa Bárbara (peak), 1,465 m, 2.7 km south
    • Saleras de Anica (peak), 1,204 m, 5.1 km north
    • Larratza (peak), 1,587 m, 5.3 km southeast
    • Arrigorrieta Occidental (peak), 1,558 m, 6.6 km east
    • Portillo de Lazar (mountain pass), 1,117 m, 7.2 km north
    • Arnaia (peak), 1,648 m, 7.3 km east

The nearest higher peak is Larratza, only 4 m higher and 5.3 km away to the southeast. Several nearby summits are close in height, so Penablanca is part of a compact ridge-and-peak system rather than an isolated mountain.

    The view from the summit

From Penablanca, the highest peaks within 25 km are spread mainly to the east and northeast. The most prominent distant summits are Pic d'Anie (2,504 m, 22.6 km northeast), Pic des Trois Rois (2,446 m, 21.0 km east), Pena Forca (2,390 m, 18.0 km east), Grande Aiguille d'Ansabère (2,377 m, 20.3 km east), Ginebral de Gamueta (2,329 m, 18.5 km east) and le Billare (2,309 m, 24.2 km east). These higher Pyrenean peaks define the wider skyline beyond the Uztarroz Mountains.

    The range

Penablanca belongs to the Uztarroz Mountains, whose highest point is Penablanca itself. The range contains 29 named peaks, and Penablanca ranks first among them. It is part of the broader mountain system of the Iberian Peninsula, the Pyrenees, the Western Pyrenees and the Southwestern Pyrenees. Within this smaller range, it is the main summit to know, even though much higher Pyrenean peaks lie farther east and northeast.

    Climate and weather

These are estimates from NASA POWER climate data, adjusted to summit height. The warmest month at the summit is July, at about 13 °C, and the coldest is January, at about 1 °C. Mean temperatures stay above freezing in every month. The surrounding area receives about 950 mm of precipitation a year; November is the wettest month at about 120 mm, and July the driest at about 45 mm.

In this part of the Pyrenees, weather can change quickly with cloud, wind and rain, and winter conditions may bring snow or icy ground on exposed slopes. Summer storms are also possible, especially on ridges and higher ground.

    Best time to visit

Because the summit mean temperature stays above freezing all year, Penablanca can be visited in several seasons, but the most comfortable period is usually late spring through early autumn. The drier stretch is around July, while November is the wettest month. Even in warmer months, the mountain can feel cool in wind and cloud, so layers are useful. In colder periods, snow and frozen ground can make the ridges slower and more demanding.

    Nature and wildlife

The slopes around Penablanca are typical of the Pyrenean mid-mountains: grassland, scrub, rocky outcrops and patches of woodland lower down. At this elevation, vegetation is usually a mix of mountain pasture and hardy shrubs, with forest more likely on sheltered lower slopes. Wildlife in the region can include mountain birds, deer and other upland species common to the Pyrenees. The exact character of the mountain changes with aspect, snow cover and grazing pressure.

    Guides and organised ascents

For a peak like Penablanca, a certified guide is usually not essential for experienced hillwalkers in settled summer conditions, but it can be useful in poor visibility, winter snow or if you want local route-finding support. In Spain, the national mountain guide association is the Spanish Mountain Guides Association (Asociación Española de Guías de Montaña (AEGM)), an IFMGA/UIAGM member. The national federation is the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME).

As examples of established guiding companies working in the mountains of Spain, Spanish Highs operates from Granada in the Sierra Nevada. Guided outings usually include route planning, navigation, safety decisions and equipment advice; the cost depends on the number of days, group size, hut nights and any technical gear needed.

    Safety and preparation

Penablanca is not a very high summit, but it still demands mountain preparation: sturdy footwear, weather protection, enough water, and the ability to handle steep ground, wind and sudden changes in visibility. In colder months, snow or ice may require extra caution and equipment. The emergency number for mountain rescue in Spain is 112, the single emergency number that dispatches rescue services.

    Interesting facts

Penablanca is the highest of 29 named peaks in the Uztarroz Mountains. Its nearest higher neighbour is Larratza, just 4 m higher and 5.3 km away to the southeast. The mountain is also the high point of its range, which makes it the key summit in the local landscape even though much higher Pyrenean peaks lie farther away.
