    Location and surroundings

Motta Bella belongs to a long mountain chain that runs from the Central European Highlands through the Alps, Western Alps, Northwestern Alps and Lepontine Alps to the Adula Massif. It is in Switzerland, in the canton of Grisons, and administratively in the municipality of Grono, within the Moesa district.

The summit rises above a landscape of lower Alpine slopes, pastureland and wooded ground, with villages on the valley side and shelters higher up. Grono lies to the west, while Leggia, Verdabbio and Castaneda are also close by. The mountain is not a major high point of the region, but it sits in a compact Alpine setting where short horizontal distances quickly turn into steep height gain.

    Neighbouring peaks

The nearest named summits and passes around Motta Bella are:

    • Torrion — 2,030 m, 1.5 km east
    • Cima Grande — 1,579 m, 1.7 km southwest
    • Cimetta — 1,603 m, 1.7 km southwest
    • Piz d'Ugin — 1,984 m, 2.2 km northeast
    • Sasso della Guardia — 2,093 m, 2.4 km south
    • Sass Mogn — 2,440 m, 2.5 km east
    • Il Pizzet — 2,218 m, 2.8 km northeast
    • Piz di Agnon — 2,208 m, 3.1 km east

The nearest higher peak is Torrion, which is 1.5 km to the east and rises 463 m above Motta Bella. Several nearby summits are only slightly higher or lower, so the mountain sits in a crowded ridge landscape rather than as an isolated top.

    The view from the summit

Within 25 km, the highest peaks include Pizzo Stella at 3,163 m, 24.4 km to the northeast; Cima Rossa at 3,161 m, 23.6 km to the north; and Piz di Pian at 3,157 m, 24.9 km to the north. Other major summits in the wider view are Pizzo Sevino to the northeast, Pizzo Curciusa to the north, and Torrone d'Orza to the northwest.

From Motta Bella, the outlook is therefore toward a ring of higher Alpine peaks on several sides, with the tallest summits lying mostly to the north and northeast. The mountain itself is much lower than these surrounding giants, so the summit view is shaped by nearby ridges and the more distant high crest of the Adula Massif.

    The range

Motta Bella is part of the Adula Massif, whose highest peak is Rheinwaldhorn at 3,402 m, about 30 km to the north. The massif spans both Italy and Switzerland, and it contains 658 named peaks.

Within that group, Motta Bella ranks 631st by elevation, which places it near the lower end of the massif’s named summits. It is therefore a minor point in a large Alpine system, but still part of the same mountain framework as the much higher central peaks of the massif.

    Access and starting points

The nearest settlements are Grono 2.5 km west, Leggia 2.7 km northwest, and Verdabbio and Castaneda, both 3.4 km northwest. There are four car parks within 2 km of the summit, with the nearest 1.7 km west. A spring lies 700 m southeast of the top, and drinking water is marked 860 m southeast.

From the car park 1.7 km west, at about 320 m, the walk is roughly 2.2 km with 1,250 m of ascent, or about 2–3 hours by Naismith’s rule. From Grono, at about 340 m, the estimate is about 3.3 km on foot and 1,220 m up, also roughly 2–3 hours. Nearby shelters include Alp de la Piazza 710 m southeast, Alp de Comun 1.8 km northeast, and Rifugio Alp di Luarn 1.9 km south.

    Climate and weather

These are estimates from NASA POWER climate data for 2001–2020, adjusted to summit elevation. At the top of Motta Bella, the warmest month is about July, with a mean temperature of about 15 °C, and the coldest is about January, with a mean of about -4 °C. Mean temperatures are above freezing from March through November.

The surrounding area receives about 1,250 mm of precipitation a year. November is the wettest month at about 150 mm, while January is the driest at about 55 mm. In this part of the Alps, weather can change quickly, with summer thunderstorms, wet autumn periods and winter snow or icy ground on higher slopes.

    Best time to visit

For a summit at 1,567 m, the most practical season is usually from late spring to autumn, and the climate figures support that pattern. Mean temperatures are above freezing from March to November, which gives a long potential walking season, although snow patches can still linger on shaded ground in spring and after early cold spells.

For easier footing and longer daylight, June to October is often the most straightforward period, with summer warmth and less persistent snow. Even then, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in the Alps, so an early start and weather check remain sensible.

    Nature and wildlife

The slopes around Motta Bella are typical of the lower and middle Alpine belt: pasture, shrubs, mixed woodland and rocky ground higher up. At this elevation, the vegetation is usually a patchwork of grassland and forest edges rather than continuous alpine rock. In spring and summer, the area can support common Alpine wildlife such as chamois, deer, foxes, marmots and birds of prey.

Because the mountain lies in a settled part of the Grisons valleys, the landscape is shaped by grazing, tracks and shelters as much as by natural terrain. The main environmental concern is to stay on existing paths where possible and avoid disturbing livestock and wildlife.

    Guides and organised ascents

For a mountain like Motta Bella, a certified guide is usually not essential for a straightforward summer hike, but it can be useful if snow, poor visibility or route-finding problems are expected. In Switzerland, mountain guides are represented by the Swiss Mountain Guides Association (SBV/ASGM), which is an IFMGA/UIAGM member. The national alpine club is the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC/CAS).

Examples of established guiding companies in Switzerland include Zermatters in Zermatt and Bergsteigerschule Pontresina (Go Vertical Mountain Guides) in Pontresina.

    Safety and preparation

Motta Bella is not a very high summit, but the ascent still involves substantial height gain from the valley side and can feel strenuous. Good footwear, weather protection, enough water and a map or offline navigation are sensible, especially because the terrain can be steep and the descent long. In wet conditions, grass and forest paths may become slippery, and in shoulder seasons snow or ice can linger on shaded sections.

For mountain rescue in Switzerland, the direct emergency number is 1414 for Rega. 144 and 112 also work. In an emergency, call as soon as possible and give your location, route and condition clearly.

    Interesting facts

Motta Bella is ranked 631st out of 658 named peaks in the Adula Massif, so it sits close to the lower end of the massif’s elevation list. Its nearest higher neighbour is Torrion, only 1.5 km away to the east. The massif’s high point, Rheinwaldhorn, is about 30 km to the north and rises to 3,402 m.

The mountain also sits in a compact part of the Alps where several nearby summits are within a few kilometres, including Cima Grande, Cimetta and Sass Mogn. That makes Motta Bella part of a closely spaced ridge landscape rather than a lone summit.
