Mountaineering Routes

A classic alpine line on Kościelec, following the mountain’s South Ridge to the summit. It is a genuine mountaineering route rather than a hiking trail, with exposed scrambling and short climbing sections on solid but sometimes broken rock. The route is typically considered more serious than the normal tourist ascent because of its exposure and the need for route-finding. Conditions can make the difficulty vary significantly, especially when snow or ice remains on the ridge. Protection may be sparse in places, so competence in moving together and assessing rock quality is important. It is best attempted in stable weather and dry conditions.

The North Face of Kościelec is one of the mountain’s established alpine objectives and is substantially more serious than the standard tourist route. It involves steep mixed climbing on rock and, depending on season, snow or ice. The face is exposed to rockfall and rapidly changing conditions, which can increase objective danger. Route-finding is important because several possible lines may exist within the face. The climb is suitable only for experienced alpinists comfortable on steep terrain. In poor conditions it can become significantly harder than the nominal grade suggests.
