The West Route is the standard and best-known mountaineering line on Kebnekaise. It is a glacier-and-rock ascent that is generally considered the easier of the two classic summit routes. Conditions can vary significantly with snow, ice, and crevasse exposure on the glacier sections. In late season, the route may become more broken and require more careful route-finding. It is a guided alpine objective rather than a simple hiking trail. The route is commonly used for summit attempts from Kebnekaise Fjällstation.
