This is the standard and best-documented mountaineering line on Jbel Toubkal, usually climbed from the Toubkal refuge. It is a non-technical alpine ascent on steep scree, broken rock, and occasional snow or ice early in the season. The route is straightforward in clear weather but can be tiring because of the sustained altitude and loose terrain. In winter or after fresh snow, the upper slopes can require crampons and an ice axe. The final section to the summit follows a broad ridge with little technical difficulty but significant exposure to wind and weather. It is commonly descended the same way.

The north face of Jbel Toubkal is a more serious alpine objective than the normal south cirque ascent. It is a snow and mixed-conditions route whose difficulty depends strongly on season and snowpack. The line is exposed to avalanche hazard in winter and to loose rock and unstable snow in shoulder seasons. It is generally considered a mountaineering route rather than a trekking ascent. Parties should expect route-finding challenges and the need for full alpine equipment. The summit finish is less straightforward than on the standard route and may involve steeper upper slopes or couloirs.
