Black Butte is in the Central Northern California Coast Range, part of the Northern California Coast Ranges in the California Coast Ranges of California, United States. Administratively it lies in Glenn County. At 2,252 m, it is the highest of the 136 named peaks in its subrange and the high point of that range. The mountain rises above a landscape of forested ridges, high plateaus and steep slopes, with much lower country around the river valleys.
