The 46 High Peaks of New York's Adirondack Mountains were chosen in the 1920s as the summits above 4,000 feet. Later surveys showed that four of them fall short and that one higher peak was left out, but the list stayed as it was, and those who finish it become Adirondack Forty-Sixers.
Mount Marcy, 1,629 m, is the highest point of New York State; Algonquin, Haystack and Skylight follow. The range is known for steep, rocky and often muddy trails, and several summits have no maintained trail, only herd paths through the forest.
