The Watzmann crossing is the classic long alpine traverse that includes Watzmann Südspitze as its final summit. It is significantly more committing than the normal route because it follows the entire exposed ridge system. The route involves sustained scrambling, route-finding, and serious exposure on narrow sections. It is a major objective in the Berchtesgaden Alps and is widely documented in mountaineering sources. Weather, rockfall, and fatigue are important hazards on this traverse. The descent from the south side is long and can be demanding even after reaching the summit.

This is the standard and best-known mountaineering route to Watzmann Südspitze. It is an alpine ridge ascent with sustained exposure and sections of scrambling rather than a simple hiking trail. The route is commonly climbed from the Watzmannhaus side and is the normal way to the summit. Conditions can be serious in wet weather, with loose rock and high exposure increasing the difficulty.
