Squak Glacier Route

The Squak Glacier Route is a documented alpine route on Mount Baker and is less commonly climbed than the Easton or Coleman-Deming lines. It is a more committing glacier route with steeper upper terrain and a reputation for being more serious in poor conditions. The route requires competent glacier travel skills and careful assessment of snow stability and crevasse coverage. Depending on season, the upper mountain may present steep snow climbing and exposed route-finding. It is generally considered a more challenging objective than the standard moderate routes on the peak. Because of its relative remoteness and condition dependence, it is less frequently used as a first-time Baker ascent.

Coleman-Deming Route

The Coleman-Deming Route is another established standard route on Mount Baker and is widely described in climbing guidebooks. It combines travel on the Coleman and Deming glaciers and is usually climbed as a glacier mountaineering objective rather than a technical rock climb. The route is longer and more complex than the Easton Glacier Route, with extensive glacier travel and potential crevasse problems. Upper-mountain conditions can include steep snow, exposed traverses, and route-finding challenges near the summit crater. It is commonly done over one or two days from a high camp, depending on conditions and party pace. As with all Baker glacier routes, late-season snow bridges and avalanche conditions can significantly affect difficulty.
