Southwest ridge from the Vernagthütte

3A | AD | III Edit route
This is a documented alpine route on Wildspitze that follows the southwest side and ridge system. It is more demanding than the normal glacier route and involves more sustained mixed climbing. Conditions on the ridge can vary significantly, with snow, ice, and exposed rock sections. Route-finding is more important here than on the standard ascent. It is a proper mountaineering objective rather than a hiking route. The route is suitable only for experienced climbers comfortable on exposed alpine ridges.

This is the standard and best-known ascent of Wildspitze. It is a classic glacier route with straightforward mountaineering character, usually climbed from the Breslauer Hütte. The route crosses glaciated terrain and requires normal alpine equipment and glacier travel skills. The main objective hazards are crevasses, snow conditions, and possible rockfall or icefall near the upper sections. The final section to the summit is typically on snow and easy mixed terrain, but conditions can make it more serious. It is generally considered the most accessible documented summit route on the peak.
