Southwest Face

5B | TD+/ED1 | V/VI Edit route
A much more serious and less commonly climbed line on the Nepal side, rising directly up the southwest face. It is a steep, demanding alpine route with significant objective hazards, including avalanche, ice, and rockfall exposure.

The standard and best-known route on Cho Oyu, climbing the broad northwest ridge from the Tibetan side. It is generally considered the least technical 8000 m route on the mountain, but it still involves glacier travel, crevasse danger, and exposure to severe altitude and weather.
