The south ridge is the standard and best-known mountaineering route on Altmann. It is a classic alpine scramble on solid but sometimes broken limestone, with short exposed passages. The difficulties are generally moderate, but route-finding can matter in poor visibility. The route is usually climbed from the Rotsteinpass area, often with an overnight stay at the hut. Snow or verglas can make the ridge significantly more serious. It is not a hiking trail and requires sure-footedness and alpine experience.

The north ridge is a more serious alpine route than the normal south ridge. It is a genuine mountaineering line with steeper climbing, greater exposure, and more demanding route-finding. Conditions can vary from dry scrambling to mixed climbing with snow or ice. Because of its character, it is less commonly used than the south ridge. It is suitable only for climbers comfortable on exposed alpine rock and with the ability to assess mountain conditions. The exact difficulty can vary with the chosen line and conditions.
