The South Ridge is the classic mountaineering route on Besso and is the line most commonly described in alpine guidebooks. It is a mixed rock-and-snow ridge climb with sustained scrambling and short steeper sections rather than a pure glacier ascent. The route is generally considered the normal way to the summit and is usually climbed from the Boval or Tschierva side depending on conditions and access. Objective hazards include loose rock, snow/ice on the ridge, and exposure to weather, especially in early season. Route-finding can be important in the upper ridge and on the approach from the hut. The difficulty is moderate alpine climbing rather than technical rock climbing, but it requires sure-footedness and comfort on exposed terrain.
