The South Route is the standard and best-documented climbing line on Ağrı Dağı (Mount Ararat). It is generally considered the normal route for guided ascents and is the most commonly used way to the summit. The route is a long snow-and-scree climb rather than a technical alpine route, but it is still a true mountaineering ascent because of the altitude, exposure to weather, and the need for crampons and ice axe in season. The upper mountain is typically climbed on snow slopes that can be steep and tiring, especially in firm or icy conditions. Objective hazards include cold, wind, poor visibility, and altitude-related problems. The route is usually done with a high camp or hut on the mountain before the summit push.
