North Face

The North Face is a serious alpine route on Breithorn and is distinctly more demanding than the normal route. It involves steeper snow and ice climbing with objective hazards from seracs, avalanche conditions, and changing snow quality. The face is influenced strongly by temperature and recent snowfall, which can make conditions highly variable. Route-finding and timing are important, especially in warm or unstable weather. This is a much more technical and committing line than the standard glacier ascent. It is suitable only for experienced mountaineers comfortable on steep alpine terrain.

Approach the north side of Breithorn from the valley or high access point
Enter the north face below the summit
Climb the snow and ice face to the upper slopes
Reach the summit ridge and summit of Breithorn
Descend by the ascent route or an appropriate glacier descent

Normal Route from Klein Matterhorn

This is the standard and by far the most commonly climbed route on Breithorn. It is a straightforward glacier and snow ascent from the Klein Matterhorn area, usually done with minimal technical difficulty in stable conditions. The route is heavily crevassed in places, so glacier travel skills and rope use are appropriate. Avalanche and whiteout hazards can be significant, especially after fresh snow or in poor visibility. The summit is often reached as a day outing from the lift system, which makes this one of the most accessible 4000-metre peaks in the Alps. Despite its relative ease, it remains a serious high-mountain route because of altitude, weather, and glacier exposure.

West Ridge

2A | PD | II
The West Ridge is a documented alpine route on Breithorn and is more committing than the normal glacier ascent. It follows a ridge line with more sustained exposure than the standard route. Conditions can vary greatly, with snow, ice, and cornices affecting difficulty. The route is still generally considered moderate in alpine terms, but it requires more route-finding and confidence on exposed terrain. It is less frequently climbed than the normal route. As with all Breithorn routes, glacier hazards and weather are major factors.
