Normal Route (West Face / West Ridge)

This is the standard and best-known route on Huayna Potosí and the one most commonly used by guided parties. It is a glacier and snow climb rather than a technical rock route, but it requires competence with crampons, ice axe, and rope travel. The main objective hazards are altitude, crevasses, and changing snow or ice conditions. In normal conditions it is considered a straightforward alpine ascent for a 6000 m peak, though the final section can feel strenuous because of the altitude. The route is usually climbed from a high camp or mountain hut on the west side. Conditions and exact line can vary with season and glacier state.

South Face

3A | AD | III
The South Face is a recognized more serious alternative to the normal route on Huayna Potosí. It is steeper and more committing than the standard west-side ascent, with greater exposure to snow and ice conditions. The route is less commonly climbed and is generally treated as a more technical alpine objective. Because of the steepness, it can involve mixed snow and ice climbing and more complex route-finding. Objective hazards include avalanche danger, icefall, and rapidly changing conditions. It is suitable only for climbers with solid alpine experience.
