Normal Route (West Face / West Ridge)

This is the standard and best-known route on Nevado Illimani, and the one most commonly described in climbing references. It is a high-altitude snow and glacier ascent with generally moderate technical difficulty, but the objective seriousness is significant because of altitude, cold, and weather exposure. The route is usually climbed from a high camp or bivouac on the mountain, with the final section following broad snow slopes and the upper ridge toward the summit. Crevasse hazard can be present on the glacier approach depending on conditions and season. Avalanche danger may exist after fresh snow or during warming periods. The route is typically considered the normal way to the summit and is the established classic ascent line.
