Normal route via the Watzmannhaus and Hocheck

3A | AD | III Edit route
This is the standard and best-known mountaineering route to Watzmann Mittelspitze. It is a serious alpine ridge climb rather than a hike, with sustained exposure and frequent use of fixed protection in the more difficult sections. The route is commonly approached from the Watzmannhaus and continues over Hocheck on the main Watzmann ridge. Conditions can be demanding because the rock is exposed and the route is long, with objective hazards from weather and loose sections. It is generally regarded as a classic Berchtesgaden Alps climb and requires sure-footedness, a head for exposure, and alpine experience. The descent is usually by the ascent route and can be tiring and time-consuming.
