Normal Route (Via Ferrata / South Face route from Rifugio Venezia)

Descent Time

This is the classic and best-known ascent of Monte Pelmo, usually described as the normal route from Rifugio Venezia. It is a mountaineering route rather than a simple hike, with sustained exposed scrambling and short climbing sections on rock. The route is partly equipped in places, but it still requires sure-footedness and comfort on steep alpine terrain. Rock quality is generally good for the Dolomites, though loose sections and exposure are significant. In wet, icy, or crowded conditions the route becomes much more serious. It is commonly climbed in summer and early autumn when the face is dry.

Monte Pelmo is also documented with a normal ascent from the north side, but the exact published route details and timing vary by source. It is an alpine route on steep rock and scree, not a trekking path. The line involves exposed climbing and route-finding on the mountain’s upper walls and ledges. Conditions and objective hazards can change the seriousness considerably. Because route descriptions differ between guidebooks, the precise statistics are left unspecified here.
