Normal Route (Southwest Ridge)

The normal route on Nevado Illampu is the best-known and most commonly documented line on the mountain. It follows the southwest ridge and upper snow/ice slopes to the summit. The route is serious alpine climbing rather than a trek, with sustained steep snow, glacier travel, and exposed ridge sections. Objective hazards can include crevasses, icefall, and unstable snow conditions, especially later in the season. The route is typically climbed from a high camp or bivouac, with a long summit day.
