Normal Route (Southwest Face)

This is the standard and best-known route on Huascarán and is the line most commonly described in guidebooks. It is a high-altitude snow and glacier climb rather than a technical rock route, but it is serious because of objective hazards. Crevasses, avalanche danger, and especially serac fall are the main concerns on the lower and middle glacier sections. The route is usually climbed with one or more high camps because of the mountain’s altitude. Conditions can change quickly, and route-finding on the glacier is important. The summit day is long and strenuous, with cold temperatures and exposure throughout.

Route Outline

Base camp / high camp in the Huascarán area -> glacier approach on the southwest side
Cross the lower glacier and climb snow slopes toward the upper basin
Continue on the broad southwest face, avoiding crevasses and serac-threatened zones
Reach the summit ridge / upper summit slopes
Summit of Nevado Huascarán -> descend the same route

Northwest Ridge

The northwest ridge is a recognized alpine route on Huascarán and is generally considered more demanding than the normal route. It involves steeper mixed terrain and more sustained exposure on the ridge. Snow and ice conditions strongly affect difficulty, and the route can require careful protection and efficient movement. Objective hazards remain significant because of altitude, weather, and glacier conditions on the approach. It is a serious mountaineering objective rather than a trekking ascent. The route is less commonly used than the southwest face and is typically attempted by experienced climbers.
