Normal route from Zermatt via Trift and the Mettelhorn ridge

The Mettelhorn is commonly climbed by its normal alpine route from the Zermatt side, usually via the Trift area and the south or southeast ridge. It is a non-glaciated mountain route in its upper section, but it still requires mountain experience because of steep, loose, and exposed terrain. The climb is generally considered a straightforward alpine ascent rather than a technical rock climb. Conditions can vary with snow early in the season, which can increase the seriousness of the route. The summit offers a classic high-mountain viewpoint over the Matterhorn and the Zermatt peaks.
