Normal route from Rifugio Berni via the north-west ridge

This is the standard and best-known mountaineering route on Punta San Matteo. It is a glacier-and-ridge ascent from the Rifugio Berni area, generally following the north-west side of the mountain to the summit ridge. The route is usually climbed with glacier equipment because crevasses and snow conditions can be significant. The upper mountain is exposed to wind, hard snow, and occasional cornices on the ridge. In normal conditions it is considered a straightforward alpine climb rather than a technical rock route. Route conditions can change substantially with season and snow cover.
