This is the standard and best-known route to Dufourspitze. It is a high-alpine glacier and snow climb with some mixed sections near the summit ridge. The route is usually climbed from the Monte Rosa Hut, which shortens the summit day and reduces objective hazard compared with lower starting points. Crevasses and route-finding on the glacier are the main technical concerns in normal conditions. The upper mountain can require careful movement on exposed snow and rock, especially when conditions are hard or icy. It is generally considered a serious but non-technical alpine ascent in good conditions.

The east ridge is a more serious and exposed alternative to the normal route. It involves steeper mixed terrain and greater commitment than the standard Silbersattel ascent. Conditions on the ridge can vary significantly with snow cover and ice, making route-finding important. The line is less commonly used than the normal route and is more demanding in both technique and exposure. It is an alpine mountaineering route rather than a trekking objective. In poor conditions it can be substantially harder than its nominal grade suggests.
