Arête des Cosmiques

Approach Time

Ascent Time

Descent Time

A classic short alpine ridge route on the Aiguille du Midi, usually climbed from the upper cable-car station. It is a mixed snow, ice, and rock itinerary with exposed sections and some route-finding. The difficulty is modest in technical terms but serious because of exposure, altitude, and often poor snow or verglas. It is commonly used as an acclimatization or training route in the Mont Blanc massif. Conditions can change quickly, and the route is not a place for beginners without ropework and mountain experience. The descent is often made by the same line or by returning to the station area.

This is a well-known high alpine route linking the Aiguille du Midi area to Mont Blanc via Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit. It is a serious snow-and-ice itinerary with crevasse danger, avalanche exposure, and objective hazards from seracs and cornices. The route is typically done in good conditions and with an early start because the upper slopes can become dangerous later in the day. It is longer and more committing than the Cosmiques arête, and it requires efficient movement on glaciers and steep snow. The route is documented in major Mont Blanc guidebooks and is one of the standard ways to reach Mont Blanc from the Aiguille du Midi sector.
