South Route

2A | PD | II
This is the standard and most frequently climbed route on Mount Elbrus. It is a glacier and snow ascent with a long, steady slope rather than a technical climb. The main objective hazards are altitude, cold, wind, and poor visibility, especially on the summit plateau. Crevasse danger is usually limited compared with more heavily broken alpine glaciers, but route-finding can still be difficult in bad weather. Most parties use cable cars and high huts or camps to reduce the amount of approach. The route is commonly climbed with crampons, ice axe, and glacier travel equipment.

North Route

3A | AD | III
The North Route is the classic northern ascent of Elbrus and is generally less developed than the south side. It is longer and more committing, with a wilder approach and fewer facilities. The route typically involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and a high camp or bivouac. Conditions can be severe, with strong winds, low temperatures, and whiteout navigation problems. It is usually considered more serious than the standard south route because of its remoteness and greater logistical demands. Technical difficulty remains moderate, but endurance and mountain judgment are important.

West Route

4A | D | IV
The West Route is one of the recognized alpine lines on Elbrus and is less commonly climbed than the standard south and north routes. It is generally a more serious snow-and-ice ascent, with steeper sections and more demanding route-finding. The line is exposed to the same high-altitude weather hazards that affect all Elbrus routes. Because it is less traveled, conditions and track quality may be less reliable. Parties should expect a more committing mountain experience than on the normal tourist-supported ascent. Exact difficulty can vary with season and conditions.

4A | D | IV
The East Route is a documented ascent line on the mountain's eastern side. It is typically a remote snow and glacier route with fewer facilities than the south side. The climb is more serious than the standard route because of its length, exposure, and reduced infrastructure. Navigation can be difficult in poor visibility, and weather can deteriorate quickly at altitude. The route is generally non-technical in the classic alpine sense, but it requires solid glacier travel skills and strong endurance. It is best suited to experienced mountaineers comfortable with self-sufficient high-altitude travel.
