The West Ridge is the classic mountaineering line to Lyskamm Orientale and is commonly described in alpine guidebooks for the Monte Rosa massif. It is a serious high-altitude snow and ice ridge with exposed sections and objective avalanche and cornice hazards. The route is technically moderate in pure climbing terms but demands excellent route-finding and stable conditions. Crevasse danger and the quality of the snowpack can strongly affect difficulty and safety. Because of the ridge character, it is usually undertaken with an early start and in firm conditions. It is a true alpine route rather than a hiking ascent.
