This is the standard and best-documented mountaineering route on Iliniza Norte, the higher of the two Iliniza summits. It is generally climbed as a non-technical alpine ascent, but it is not a hiking trail and requires glacier-free mountaineering movement on steep volcanic terrain. The route is usually done from a refuge or high camp area on the mountain. Conditions can include loose rock, steep scree, and exposure to wind and cold at altitude. In wet or icy conditions the route becomes more serious and may require crampons and an ice axe. The summit is commonly climbed as an acclimatization objective in Ecuador.

Iliniza Sur has a documented normal ascent route, but it is significantly more difficult and serious than the north peak. The climb is a true mountaineering route with steep, exposed rock and mixed terrain rather than a simple walk-up. Route-finding can be important, especially in poor visibility. The mountain is known for loose rock and objective hazards from weather and altitude. Many climbers treat it as a more technical companion peak to Iliniza Norte. The route is typically described in Ecuador climbing references as the standard way to the summit.
